Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Music Generations

It has been 20 years after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the opportunity to become rock legends. Not in reality, but try convincing someone who's nailed the epic lengthy guitar solo before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the display synchronized to a song. Each riff mimicked particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio had already tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Collaboratively, they established the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a remarkable influence for many musicians included, introducing classic bands to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – despite the fact initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. However, when the game took off, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls how the series brought classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered outdated material, but then when it was included in the game and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it was cool. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the band's first record was still not available in the US, meaning the game was a key medium for exposure for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several knew us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles Enduring Influence

Rock’s biggest acts soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band more money compared to their studio albums. It sold well over half a million copies in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, a streamer completed a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics but an array of personalization features. This track is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer claimed requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour before their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I recall our distributors informing us that our records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the song was used in promotional material for a major film. “In the past I felt differently, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to a single track, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got a unique path in music and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best marketing, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a rock star on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators believed humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

The majority installments were released in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs such as DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals died down, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the community alive, and there’s set to be a new product from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has begun work on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry following the classic?

“We thought those games could be similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to persist for future fans.”
