Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
